Defibrillating the Christian Man’s Heart
10/8/09
I. The Problem: A Fibrillating heart - Hyperactive but ineffective - Sound familiar?
Ø High activity with little to show for it
Ø Looking for love in all the wrong places
Ø Restlessness for more with no satisfaction – enough is never enough
Ø Sensing of “where did all the time go?” – What has my life meant?
What happens if a heart is not defibrillated? – death!
II. The Martha Dilemma
Luke 10: 41 "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
Matthew 6: 31 So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
III. This is not “Let Go and Let God” theology
Example of Nehemiah
Ø God’s work to rebuild the work but Nehemiah and others did the work
Ø God is their protector but they posted guards and worked with a sword in one hand and a tool in the other
Ø The wall was built in record time but God received the praise and honor
IV. The Dynamic partnership Between God and Man
Philippians 2: 12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.
V. How to Defibrillate the Unproductive Christian Heart
2 Peter 1: 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. 10 Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
