Godly Discipline

2/4/10

I. Godly Discipline

1 Timothy 4: 7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance 10 (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe.

II. The Cascading Disasters of a Lack of Discipline

1. Financial irresponsibility - Marital strife - Broken relationships - Stress - Depression - Loss of Faith - More Financial troubles, etc

2. Addictions - Financial troubles - Broken health & broken relationships - Loss of faith - Depression - Greater need for relief through more addictions, etc

3. Poor physical discipline - poor health - poor finances - poor relationships - Depression - Loss of faith - More bad habits to reduce the pain, etc

4. Undisciplined relationships - Divorce - Stress - Poor finances - Loss of faith -

Bad health -Worse relationships, etc

5. Lack of mental discipline intellectual stagnation job, financial & family problems Health problems Spiritual problems, etc

III. Godly Discipline is a Diagnostic for these Areas of un-discipline

Ø What is wrong in my faith that makes me need these addictions?

Ø Why am I not more loving like Christ in my relationships?

Ø Why do I need to use money/possessions to feel worthy?

Ø Why am I not motivated to be about my Father’s business?

Ø Why do I not treat my physical body more like the “housing for God that it is?

IV. Godly Discipline

2 Timothy 1: 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

Hebrews 12: 4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son." 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8 If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10 Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. 12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13 "Make level paths for your feet," so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.

V. Build Margin

Ø Relational

Ø Financial

Ø Time

Ø Emotional

Ø Intellectual

Ø Physical/health

All of this flows from deep Godly discipline

VI. Result = Blessing Cascade

Galatians 5: 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Strong spiritual discipline (Holy Spirit guided/Christ as Lord)

Ø Huge influence on physical, relational, financial, emotional and intellectual and on everything else that matters
